Policy Types

Third-Party vs Comprehensive

Nepal law requires at minimum third-party insurance. Here is what each policy covers — and what it does not.

Third-Party
Third-Party Insurance
Mandatory by law

Covers damage or injury you cause to others. Quick to arrange, regulated premium rates set by Beema Samiti, instant digital certificate.

Covers
Legal liability for third-party death or injury
Third-party property damage
Legal costs and court fees if applicable
Does NOT cover
Your own vehicle damage
Your own injuries
Theft of your vehicle
Fire or natural calamity damage to your vehicle
Add-On Cover

Enhance Your Policy

Bolt these on to a comprehensive policy to fill the gaps standard cover misses.

Zero Depreciation
Claims settled at full part cost — no depreciation deducted. New parts at current market value.
New vehicles, first 3–5 yrs
Engine Protection
Covers water ingress, oil leakage, hydrostatic lock & gearbox damage — critical during Nepal's monsoon.
Essential in Nepal
Return to Invoice (RTI)
Total loss or theft in year one? Receive the full invoice value — zero depreciation deducted.
First year only
Roadside Assistance
24/7 towing, jumpstart & emergency help across Nepal — including remote hilly roads.
24/7 Nepal-wide
Personal Accident Cover
Financial protection for the owner in case of death or permanent disability from a vehicle accident.
Mandatory for some types
Extended Battery Protection
EV-specific. Covers battery damage from fire, water ingress & electrical faults beyond manufacturer warranty.
EV owners only
No Claim Bonus

Drive Clean,
Pay Less

No Claim Bonus (NCB) rewards you with a discount on next year's own-damage premium for every claim-free year. It belongs to you — not the vehicle — so it follows you to a new car.

Smart tip
For minor damages, consider paying out-of-pocket. One claim resets your NCB to 0%. Compare your repair cost against the discount you stand to lose.
Accumulates year after year
The longer you stay claim-free, the higher your discount becomes at each renewal.
Fully transferable to a new car
NCB belongs to you, not the vehicle. Change your car and your NCB moves with you.
One claim resets to zero
Any claim — however small — wipes your NCB completely. You restart from 0%.
Own damage premium only
NCB does not apply to the third-party portion — only on the own-damage component.
Exclusions

What is Not Covered

Knowing these before you drive prevents surprises at claim time.

Drunk Driving
Any accident under influence of alcohol or drugs — claim rejected outright.
No Valid Licence
Driver holds no valid or expired licence at time of accident — full rejection.
Mechanical Breakdown
Faults from internal mechanical or electrical failure — not accident related.
Normal Wear & Tear
Gradual deterioration of parts over time is not a covered peril.
Consequential Damage
Losses that occur as an indirect result of the main incident.
Commercial Use
Private vehicles used for hire or delivery (taxi, Pathao, courier) are not covered.
Outside Declared Area
Using the vehicle outside the permitted geographical area may void your claim.
Depreciation on Parts
Deducted on replaced parts unless Zero Depreciation add-on is active.
War / Terrorism
Damages caused by war, nuclear events, or terrorist activities.
Electric Vehicles

EV Insurance is Different

Standard policies may not cover EV-specific risks. Here is what you need before insuring an electric car in Nepal.

EV components need specialist cover
Battery, charging equipment & electrical systems require dedicated coverage. Battery depreciation is also calculated differently from regular vehicles.
Battery Coverage — the critical difference
EV batteries are expensive and depreciate differently. Covered perils include:
Fire and explosion
Accident damage
Theft of battery
Short circuit damage
Water ingress — manufacturing defect
Normal aging or capacity loss — not covered
Charging Equipment Cover
Your home charger (wallbox) and cables also need protection:
Electrical surge damage to wallbox
Fire during charging session
Theft and vandalism
Charging cable theft — Type-2, CCS2
EV Roadside Assistance
Standard towing can damage EVs. Our EV-specific assistance:
Battery depletion — mobile charging on site
Towing to nearest EV charging station
Flatbed tow only — EVs must NOT be towed on wheels
Recommended Cover for EV Owners
Must-have combination for complete EV protection:
Comprehensive insurance — third-party alone is insufficient
Battery protection add-on
Zero depreciation (vehicles under 5 years)
EV roadside assistance
Return to Invoice for first year
EV premiums are generally lower than equivalent ICE vehicles
Lower fire risk, fewer moving parts, and government EV incentives in Nepal make comprehensive EV insurance more affordable than most expect.

Insurance FAQs

Common Insurance Questions

Straight answers to the questions we get asked most.

Is car insurance mandatory in Nepal?
Yes. Third-party insurance is mandatory under the Motor Vehicles Act. Driving without it means an on-spot fine and possible vehicle impoundment. Comprehensive is optional but strongly recommended.
Can I drive immediately after buying insurance?
Yes. Your policy activates immediately upon payment. You receive a digital certificate via email and SMS right away. Physical certificate delivered within 3–5 days.
What if I miss my renewal date?
There is a grace period, but you are legally uninsured during this window. If an accident occurs in the grace period, there is no coverage. We send reminders 30, 15, and 7 days before expiry to help you avoid this.
Do I lose my NCB if I make a small claim?
Yes. Any claim — however small — resets your NCB to 0% for the next year. For minor repairs, consider paying out of pocket and preserving your NCB discount.
Does insurance cover Nepal's earthquakes and floods?
Yes — for comprehensive policies. Natural calamities including earthquakes, floods, and landslides are covered as standard. Third-party does not cover your own vehicle from any cause.
What documents are needed to buy insurance?
Vehicle Registration Certificate (Bluebook), valid driving licence, previous insurance policy copy (for renewal or NCB transfer), citizenship or passport, and address proof.
Can I claim if I was at fault in the accident?
Yes, with comprehensive insurance. Your own vehicle damage is covered regardless of fault. Standard exclusions still apply — drunk driving, no valid licence, etc.
What happens if my car is stolen?
For comprehensive: file an FIR immediately, inform your insurer within 24 hours, submit original keys and RC book. After the 60–90 day investigation, insurer pays the declared IDV minus deductible. Third-party does not cover theft.
Can I get insurance for a very old car (15+ years)?
Comprehensive is difficult for vehicles over 10 years old. Some specialised insurers may offer cover after vehicle inspection. Third-party is always available — mandatory regardless of vehicle age.
Can I cancel my insurance mid-year?
Yes, but: refund = premium paid minus expired period premium minus cancellation charges. Your NCB for that year is also lost. Usually not beneficial unless vehicle is sold or declared total loss.

Financing FAQs

Common Financing Questions

Everything you need to know before applying for a vehicle loan in Nepal.

How much loan can I get for a new vehicle?
As per current NRB directives, lenders can finance up to 60% of the vehicle's value. You need to arrange at least 40% as a down payment for new vehicles.
Do EVs get better loan terms?
Yes. EVs attract lower interest rates due to the government's green loan incentives and customs duty relief. Class A banks offer EV loans up to 10 years — longer than the 7-year maximum for ICE vehicles.
What is the difference between fixed and variable rates?
A fixed rate stays the same throughout your loan tenure — your EMI never changes. A variable rate fluctuates based on the lender's base rate, meaning your EMI can go up or down over time.
What is Hire Purchase and how is it different from a bank loan?
In a Hire Purchase arrangement, the lender technically owns the vehicle while you are making payments. Full ownership transfers to you on the final installment. It is offered by NRB-licensed companies rather than commercial banks, and is one of the primary options for used vehicle financing.
Can I get a loan for a used vehicle?
Yes, but options are more limited. Used vehicle financing is primarily offered by Class A Commercial Banks and NRB-licensed Hire Purchase Companies. Class B and C banks do not currently offer used vehicle loans.
Is a vehicle valuation required for used vehicle loans?
Yes. A mandatory valuation report is required before loan disbursement. For used EVs, a Battery State of Health (SoH) assessment is also required to assess battery condition and remaining capacity.
Is bluebook transfer mandatory?
Absolutely. Bluebook transfer to the buyer's name is mandatory before any loan is disbursed for a used vehicle. Lenders will not proceed without this.
Can loan terms change after I apply?
Yes. All rates and terms are subject to revision based on Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) directives and government policies. Always confirm the latest terms directly with your chosen institution before finalising.
